AI4OCEAN International Scientific Conference

A two-day event bringing together participants from the international scientific community. The conference will feature peer-reviewed scientific works presented in thematic sessions, as well as discussions focused on the application of artificial intelligence to marine and maritime challenges.

The programme will cover recent developments in data-driven ocean observation, marine biodiversity monitoring, coastal and environmental monitoring, maritime surveillance, multi-sensor data integration, AI-based modelling approaches, digital twins of the ocean, and open-access data sets and benchmarks.

The conference will showcase research conducted in Cyprus and internationally, while strengthening CMMI’s scientific profile through the organisation of an international scientific event.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - Scientific and Thematic Scope for the AI4OCEAN International Scientific Conference

The use of Artificial Intelligence in marine and maritime research has led to significant advances in the fields. In the Call for Abstract, we will invite contributions of original research (ongoing or complete) that explores methodological innovations, theoretical advancements, and applied research at the intersection of AI and the marine and maritime domains. The scientific and thematic scope of the AXOLOTL International Scientific Conference is aligned with the AXOLOTL Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), which provides the project’s public strategic framework for research and development innovation priorities. The SRIA will be made publicly available through the CORDIS platform. The following will be provided as a non-exhaustive list of example abstract topics:

  • Applications for biodiversity.
  • Applications for coastal health.
  • Applications against pollution, including coastal runoffs, marine litter, and underwater noise .
  • Applications targeting other anthropogenic factors.
  • Applications involving remote sensing (satellites, underwater, acoustics, etc.) data.
  • Bioacoustics - AI and datasets with gaps and/or emerging knowledge.
  • Advanced learning strategies, including semi/self-supervised learning, few-shot learning, and continual learning.
  • Foundation models.
  • Multi-modal and cross-modal methods, data fusion, or other spatiotemporal type of modelling.
  • Methods involving multi-modal sensing, cross-modal representation learning, spatiotemporal modelling, or data fusion.
  • Methods addressing data and label scarcity in marine and maritime contexts .
  • Methods for uncertainty quantification and explainable AI.
  • Edge, embedded, or energy-efficient AI .
  • ·Real-time or near real-time monitoring capabilities.
  • Big data and HPC.
  • ·New datasets.
  • New benchmarks on new or existing datasets.

Submission information

Each abstract should include the title, authors and affiliations, a concise list of keywords, a summary suitable for the online programme, and an abstract describing the context, objectives, data, methods, main or expected results, conclusions and perspectives.

Abstracts will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee, with support from external experts where appropriate. Review will consider scientific quality, originality, relevance to the conference themes, methodological rigour, clarity and potential impact. Accepted contributions will be scheduled as oral or poster presentations according to the reviewers’ recommendations and programme requirements.

The submission platform, abstract template and deadlines will be announced on this page. Please check back for the opening of the call and submission instructions.

A welcoming scientific environment

The organisers are committed to an inclusive and respectful conference environment. We aim to support broad international participation and a balanced programme across disciplines, career stages, geographical backgrounds and genders. A code of conduct will apply across presentations, poster sessions, workshops and networking activities.
